Torture of walking around Siam Square could improve with new street vendor plan

Anyone who’s taken an evening stroll down Rama I Road in front of Siam Square knows one of the most popular areas to walk downtown is often the least walkable.

After receiving complaints from passers-by, who are often stuck waiting for someone to finish buying some ugly earrings, city officials announced plans to relocate the street vendors clogging walkways in the Siam Square area.

Over 500 street vendors on Rama I, Phayathai, and Henri Dunant roads will be told to move their stalls into Siam Square Soi 1 in front of Scala Theater to ease the sidewalk congestion, Deputy Bangkok Governor, police Lt. Gen. Asawin Kwanmuang said Wednesday.

Currently vendors are allowed to set up their shops on the sidewalk every day except Monday from 6pm to midnight.

As Siam Square Soi 1 can hold approximately 300 shops, the administration will allow vendors to operate every day, but they will have to take turns.

Meanwhile landowner Chulalongkorn University will consider how to implement the request from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, which hopes to have the sidewalks clear next month, Thairath reported.
